Introducing the Board of Trustees
Leanne Heaps - Chairperson
Hi, I became Chair of the Mataura School Board of Trustees at the start of term 4 2016. I am mum to Max (7) who is in Room Pūkeko and Zoe (5) Room Kiwi and Lachlan (3) who attends Hope Preschool. My husband Mark and I live on his family sheep farm in Ferndale. I have a Bachelor of Business Studies majoring in Economics and a Graduate Diploma in Rural Studies both from Massey University. I have previously worked in the Rural Servicing industry in Fertiliser Sales and in more recent years as an Agri Finance Manager with ANZ Bank. Locally I am currently the convenor of the Mataura Junior Rugby Club and have previously been in roles on Mataura Plunket, Gore Kids Hub and Gore Toy Library. Our boards focus is on great outcomes for all our students and I enjoy seeing the progress being made by our students. I meet weekly with Mrs Dennison with updates on what is occurring in the school to ensure I am always informed, during these meetings we also continue our work to ensure we are on target to achieving our schools goals. Andrea Russell - Vice Chairperson
Hi I’m Andrea. My partner Vaughan Ramage and I have Sam (10) whose in Room Kererū. Jack (12) is enjoying being at Menzies College. I work part time at Tulloch McNab Transport. I am a member of the Mataura Volunteer Fire Brigade. Taxi driver after school to get the boys to their sport! When I get time I squeeze in a round of golf! This is my second term on the Mataura BOT. My role on the BOT is looking after Finances with Mrs Dennison. We set the budget for the year based on the number of students and where the teachers and student results indicate the money should be directed to eg concentrating on Maths. During the year we keep a watchful eye over how the finances are tracking compared to the budget. Our BOT is all about student achievement and I’ve enjoyed attending courses and meetings and learning some new skills. Hi. I'm Leanne. My husband David and I have lived in Mataura for about 20 years now and are the parents of Seth who is a past Mataura school pupil now a year 13 student at Gore High School and Tayla who is in year 6 at Mataura school now. I work for Silver Fern Farms Waitane. I have been on the BOT at school for a couple of years now and currently manage the school flats and when Seth was at school I was involved with the PTA. I am also involved with the Mataura Rugby Club having managed a few teams and I like to go out and attempt to play a game of netball for the Mataura Green Acres Netball team. I got involved with the BOT just to give a little bit back to the school whose teachers do so much for our kids and make our school such an awesome environment to be in. Brendon (Moe) Murray
Hi my name is Moe Murray, I am married to Christine and am also a father to Tom, Anna and Leah, with Anna and Leah attending Mataura School. I, myself, was also a pupil many years ago at Mataura School. As a parent I enjoy being on the BOT for the benefit of the pupils and the school. I am a engineer and business owner of Gore Sheetmetal and Engineering. I'm also a Senior firefighter in the Mataura fire brigade as well as being the local Mataura Licensing Trust board member for the Mataura township. Hi I am Anah and Mum to Sela Kaufusi in the Bilingual Class, Ruma Ruru, with Whaea Sam. I am a Registered Nurse currently pursuing my love of te reo me ona tikanga Māori at Kia Ngawari Te Kōhanga Reo where I am Kaitari (Administrator) plus one of the Kaiawhina (Childcare workers). I am in my second term on the Board and am the Māori/Community Liaison as well as contributing to Documentation and Secretary. I am enjoying the ongoing challenge and learning experience of the Board.

Shona Willis - Staff Representative
My name is Shona Willis and I teach Room Takahē. This is my fourth year teaching at Mataura School, and the third that I am on the Board as the staff representative. I am also responsible for the Health and Safety portfolio, and I report to the Board on this at every meeting. Susan Dennison – Principal
Kia Ora, I began here as principal in 2006. I am married to John, and we have 3 children at St Peter’s College Louise (Year 13), Tom (Year 11), and Albert (Year 9). We spend weekends on family adventures, often on our bikes or at football. All 3 have played football for the Gore Junior Wanderers club. This year I am the club president again.
I studied at Otago University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Education, and a Diploma of Teaching. I come from a teaching family as my Mum was a teacher and one of my sisters is. My teaching career started in Greymouth, then Christchurch, and then at Longford Intermediate and St Mary’s in Gore.
My goals this year are to find ways for all students to make accelerated learning progress, and for some this will mean looking at interesting ways for us to engage and motivate them. We are starting this year by taking our students to the sea to experience the water with the company of their peers. We are hoping to ignite a curiosity in their learning, not just have a good time. My other goal is around increasing the oral language ability for our school. And although it’s not me doing the teaching - it’s about providing the drive and resources for teachers to get this tracking higher.
